I was recently at my daughters Sports Day and what I witnessed left me nothing short of raging. My opinion of Sports days and their lack of competitive nature I’ll leave for another rant…but this was a new level of absurdity.
The Sports Day began fine with the younger ones having a couple of races, and then came the tiniest level of drizzle which lasted about 5-10 minutes.
Due to this ‘inclement’ weather, the event was shortened due to the field being deemed ‘too unsafe’. I actually couldn't believe what I was witnessing.
The field was almost bone dry and they were deeming it ‘too unsafe’. This frenzy was caused by a couple of kids skidding a little on the finish line.
Having reflected from my recent Instagram rant, I actually think this is a societal problem, rather than a school issue.
The schools are pretty much left with no choice in these circumstances due to the snowflake nature of a minority group of parents.
I actually spoke with the school after, and some parents said it should have been called off sooner (It piddled for 5 fucking minutes!)
I took time off work to witness this debacle, so I left before the finish to return to work, but when my daughter arrived home, her words were…
‘That was all a bit dramatic to call it off’.
Her friend was in tears as she was distraught her races were cancelled.
I know this is only kids sports day, but I feel like the underlying tone of the way this was treated shows a larger problem of just how soft we are becoming…
Kids slip, kids fall over, they injure themselves. Nothing major was going to happen through this light drizzle and they should have been made to adapt to this.
How far are we going to take this?
Are we going to start calling off football games the minute it rains, in case a kid slips and hurts themselves?
It's part of learning and growing up. We are molly coddling them to the nth degree and they aint going to be ready for the real world.
Its really fucking tough out here in the real world and you need to adapt all the time. If it is a bit slippery, then the kids need to adjust to this, not be hauled off.
Adult life just isn’t like this and they need to be prepared.
Agree? Disagree? Interested to hear your opinion too!
Thank you for reading my sweary rants, it feels good to know there are other parents out there on the same wavelength.
