When Life Gets a Bit Stale

About five weeks ago, I hit that weird place where everything just felt a bit... off.

Not falling apart. Not in crisis. Just not firing on all cylinders.

The gym had become boring. I was still going, but more out of habit than anything else. I’d half-arse a session, tell myself at least I went, and then reward myself with a Guinness and a load of shit like I’d just completed a David Goggins-inspired Ironman.

Food got worse. Sleep got worse. I didn’t feel terrible — just heavy. Flat.

I’ve always been into fitness, so I clocked the shift pretty quickly. And usually, when that wall shows up, I know it’s time to shake something up.

Entropy had kicked in.

The Bit That Changed

ad been having some ‘sessions’ with.

Is it normal for PTs to give sessions in hotel rooms? (Asking for a friend.)

Right, where were we…

So, we booked a session. No big plan. Just a “let’s give this a go” kind of thing.

And honestly, it was exactly what I needed.

The sessions have been fucking brutal — but in a weird, sadistic kind of way. I’m learning stuff I’ve never done before.

I nearly passed out from the assault bike in session one. That thing genuinely gave me PTSD.

But I walked out wrecked… and weirdly buzzing to go back.

At the same time, I started tracking what I was eating again. Not in some “six-meals-of-chicken-a-day” way — just keeping an eye on things. That Dr Cal app is a game changer for lazy fuckers like me.

It made me realise how far I’d drifted food-wise without even noticing.

A few weeks in, and things started to shift.

Not just physically — mentally too.

More energy for work. More patience at home. I felt like me again.

Looking Back Now

What’s funny is, none of this felt like a big decision.

Just a small change. But it reminded me how easy it is to slide into autopilot without realising.

It got me thinking… what other areas of life have I been coasting through?

I don’t think I’m alone in this. You go from one thing to the next - school runs, meetings, sorting dinner,  and because nothing’s on fire, you assume everything’s fine.

But “fine” is sneaky. It looks acceptable from the outside, but underneath, it can feel weirdly hollow.

Just Sharing

Anyway, I’m not writing this to say you should get a PT, or track your food, or do anything really.

This isn’t some life tip.

It’s just what’s been happening for me lately.

And if you’re in that same kind of headspace, a bit flat, a bit “meh”, maybe this gets you thinking.

That’s what I love about these emails. I’ll get a message from someone saying,

“This made me realise I haven’t done anything for me in months,”

or

“I forgot how much I loved doing X.”

And I love those chats.

So yeah. Nothing profound. Just a small shift that gave me a bit of my spark back.

Still winging it. Still figuring things out.

But definitely feeling more alive than I did five weeks ago.

Funny how it started with one DM on Instagram.

One small change and the rest kind of took care of itself.
